Welcome to Dejobaan BeBop! This document serves as a basic tutorial for interaction with the BeBop World. =[What is BeBop?]======================================================= In Dejobaan BeBop, you are in charge of the inhabitants of a small suburban house. These people - called BeBops - look to you to shape their lives, care for them, and to make sure that they don't get into any trouble (unless that's what you want). You'll build a home, furnish it, and bring in the BeBops of your choice. Follow their lives, and help them make the most out of each day. It's up to you to provide them with life's basic necessities, as well as guidance. The better you care for your BeBops, the more they'll give back to their BeBop home. =[Loading BeBop]======================================================== To get started, unzip the package and install the three PRC files (BeBop.prc, BeBopMaps.prc, and PToolboxLib.PRC) to your PalmOS-compatible palmtop. You will need at least 200k of free space on your palmtop to install. =[A New Home]=========================================================== As soon as you start the game, you'll be taken to the Main Menu. Tap the "Play!" button to begin. You can create up to 6 BeBops to live in your home; we recommend 3-4 for starters, as it provides a good balance of excitement and responsibility. The game will ask you to select the appearance, name, and gender of each BeBop. Once you have done so, you're ready to go! You can leave BeBop any time; the game will automatically save your home each time you exit, should you need to use your Palm for another application. When you return, you can tap the "Play!" button again to pick up where you left off. In the future, if you wish to start over from scratch, you can hit the "New Home" button to do so. =[The Basics]=========================================================== You've moved your BeBops in, and are presented with a house devoid of any furnishings. First thing's first -- your BeBops cannot live in an empty house, so let's furnish it. Choose your purchases carefully, as you have a finite amount of money. First, try purchasing some food: 1. Click on an empty square within the house. 2. Select "Foodstuffs". 3. Select the "Can of Soup". A can of soup should now appear in the house. You can tell a BeBop to use it by clicking on him/her, then clicking on the can. If your BeBops are moving around too quickly to be tapped, you can either hit the Pause button at the top of the screen (and manage the house at your leisure) or hit the Happy-Face button (which will pause the game long enough for you to select a BeBop.) The can of soup can only be used once, after which it becomes an empty can. To clean it up, click on it and select 'discard'. Some items, such as the Bowl of Fruit have multiple meals, and can be refilled when empty. Another basic necessity is bedding. Though your BeBops can fall asleep anywhere if they're tired enough, they'll rest better if the bedding is more comfortable -- do them a favor and buy a bedroll or two. After you have these basics, start purchasing Health items (to keep clean), Toys (so that your BeBop can have fun), and Training items (so that your BeBops can learn new skills.) But do keep some spare cash on hand for food. =[Health and Happiness]================================================= There are six "reserves" which much be kept high for a happy BeBop. These are: ---------------------------------------------------------- Nourish - Nutrition level; increase this by keeping your home well-stocked with food. If this goes down too far, your BeBop will die. Rest - Keep your BeBops well-rested, or they'll be grumpy, and refuse to do things. Fun - Keep this reserve up by having your BeBops play with toys, listen to music, and watch TV. Clean - A filthy BeBop is not quick to make friends. They can take sponge baths with paper towels in a pinch. Social - Loney BeBops fare poorly -- keep them socializing and happy. Train - This increases when a BeBop reads, exercises, or otherwise learns new skills. A low Training reserve means that a BeBop is in the mood to learn more. ---------------------------------------------------------- Over time, these reserves affects a BeBop's Happiness score which, in turn, affects how well s/he will perform during competitions. A higher Happiness means a higher likelihood of winning. You can monitor these by clicking on a BeBop within the house, or by clicking on the happy-face icon at the top of the screen. While it is important to keep all of these reserves up, it is vital that you pay special attention to the BeBop's "Nourish" reserve. If this is depleted, your BeBop will die of starvation. In general, however, if you keep the house properly stocked with food, this will not be a concern. =[Competitions]========================================================= Competitions are your household's primary source of income. There are three types of these -- Mind, Fitness, and Charm. Over time, you can train your BeBops to become better in one or more of these areas. The better a BeBop is, the more money he or she can win at a competition. At 1pm every afternoon, someone will ring the doorbell. If you answer it (by clicking on the door), you will be offered a chance to enter a BeBop in a competition. Initially, you'll want your BeBops to compete against easy (Level 1) opponents. While a Level 1 competition brings fairly little in the way of prize money, it's the best bet for an untrained BeBop. During the competition, you'll see a number of BeBops with bar graphs below them; these bars show how close each BeBop is to winning. The BeBop whose bar graph reaches the top first wins the competition. You can tip the balance in your favor -- show your BeBop your support by clicking on the "Cheer" button. Once a competition ends, a winner is declared. If your BeBop wins, your home receives a cash prize which you can use to keep things running. If your BeBop loses, that's okay -- there's always a rematch tomorrow. =[Skills and Training]================================================== BeBops improve their competition skills primarily through the use of training items. You can purchase bookcases to improve the Mind skill, exercise equipment to improve the Fitness skills, and an assortment of other equipment to improve Charm. For starters, purchase a 5kg weight. This will allow your BeBops to train in Fitness. As with most other items, you can get your BeBop to use the weight by clicking first on the BeBop, and again on the weight. Assuming your BeBop is in the mood, s/he will begin training. (If not, wait a while, and make sure that your BeBops are getting enough Fun and Rest.) Training in this manner increases a BeBop's skills; you can monitor these by tapping him or her, and selecting the "Skills" button. You'll be shown the current level for each skill as well as progress towards the next level. Once a BeBop reaches Level 2 of a skill, s/he will effectively be able to compete in a Level 2 competition, and can bring home more prize money. Entering a BeBop into a high level competition automatically increases their skill in that area. This is useful, as training items will only take your BeBops so far. =[Items]================================================================ A variety of objects exist to fulfill your BeBop's needs. Edible items such as canned food and fruit provide inexpensive, single-use meals to keep their Nourishment reserve up. Bowls of fruit and refrigerators can store multiple meals at once, requiring only periodic attention to keep them filled. Once you have an item in the house, you can examine it by clicking on it. Where appropriate, this will show how many uses the item has left, and/or how worn it is. You're also offered one or more of the following options: ----------------------------------------------------------- Restock - Certain items, such as refrigerators, need to be periodically checked, and refilled. You can restock an item to full capacity for a fixed cost. Repair - Some items wear out with use, and eventually break completely if not cared for. The cost of repairs depends both on the value of the item, and the extent of wear. There's a base cost associated with repairs, so it's not cost-effective to repair everything. Discard - If you no longer want an item in your home, click here to get rid of it. Sell - If an item can be sold for money, the 'Discard' button will be replaced by the 'Sell' button. The sale price of an item is roughly 2/3 of the original price minus any repair costs. Info - This displays an item's basic characteristics and sales spiel. ----------------------------------------------------------- It is also possible to purchase trees for the outside of your home, and roofing tiles for the top. =[Social Interaction]=================================================== In order to keep your BeBops happy, you'll want to keep their Social reserves up by having them interact with each other. Conversing is a good way to get BeBops to befriend each other, as is having them go out for various activities. To have two BeBops interact with each other, first click on one BeBop, then click on another. You will be given a choice between talking and going out for an activity. If you select "Talk", the two BeBops will chit-chat. If you select "Go Out", you'll be given a list of possible activities. The range of possible activities will increase as two BeBops become more friendly with each other. During the late afternoon, neighbors may also drop by for a visit. This is a nice way to socialize and make new friends. Since they don't want to overstay their welcome, they will typically leave around 7pm. When two BeBops return from an outside activity, you will receive a message indicating how much they liked that activity. If a BeBop enjoys a particular activity, s/he will become more friendly towards the BeBop s/he went out with. Conversely, engaging in an activity that a BeBop doesn't like will decrease his or her affection for the other. BeBops begin by viewing each other neutrally. You can check to see how well a BeBop likes others by bringing up the 'Relations' screen. Tap one of your BeBops twice, and select 'Relations'. The scale of friendship ranges from "Strong Hatred" to "Best Friends": Strong Hatred Firm Dislike Dislike Slight Dislike Neutral Cordial Friendly Friendship Best Friends The friendlier two BeBops are, the more they'll benefit (Socially) from interacting with each other. =[BeBop Home Info]====================================================== Upon clicking the "Home" icon at the upper-right corner of the screen, you'll be given a summary of your home's current status; for example: It is 5:25PM in Day 44. You have $7779 in the bank. One BeBop lives in your home. Your BeBop score is 3 out of a possible 12 points, giving you the rank of BeBop Beginner. The "BeBop score" is just one gauge of how well things are going. The point breakdown is as follows, (all points are cummulative): +1 if there's more than $1000 in the bank. +1 if there's more than $5000. +1 if there's more than $10,000. +1 if there's more than $50,000. +1 if there's more than $100,000. +1 if more than 3 BeBops live in your home. +1 for each BeBop that is "Happy" or better. Ranks are also awarded, based on the percentage of total points achieved: 0% - BeBop Newcomer 1%-9% - BeBop Apprentice 10%-49% - BeBop Journeyman 50%-79% - BeBop Master 80%-100% - BeBop Grandmaster =[Gambling]============================================================= If you have a telephone, your BeBops can call a taxi and visit the casino once every 12 hours. The payoff chart for the slot machine is as follows: Payline Payoff (x Initial Bet) ------------------ ---------------------- 3 Triple Bars 50x 3 Double Bars 25x 3 Single Bars 15x 3 Sevens 10x 3 Cherries 5x 2 of Any Kind 2x After visiting a casino, it will take 60 minutes for a BeBop to return home. =[The Full Version]===================================================== You can order the full version online for only $14.95.
